A Full Weekend

Saturday began early with Spencer and I reporting at Neptune Park at 7:00 a.m. to prepare for the city's annual Easter egg hunt. It was great to have so many of the youth city council in attendance. Destry was going to take Sarah to her friend's, Lydia Prestwich, baptism at 9:00, but she was being stubborn and refusing to go. I know that she would be sad in the end if she didn't go, but glad when she did. So we arrived a good 20 minutes late, hoping that we had not missed it. We hadn't.

They had some difficulties getting the font filled and grandma gave a long talk. Perfect. Lucky for us, since Lydia was scheduled first for the font. We had a lovely time and we cam home and began our "Saturday chores." I had plenty of them to get done. We would be celebrating Sarah's birthday on Sunday so I needed to make one more trip to the grocery store, decorate her cake, and clean the house. The kids did their part and Destry spent several hours cleaning carpets.

We bought a carpet cleaner at Costco a couple of weeks ago because it was cheaper than paying to have them professionally done even one time. I knew that if we hated it, we could take it back. Costco is good like that. It seems to work great and Destry has been a trooper cleaning and cleaning and cleaning. Most of the house has been done. Spencer's room needs to be done as does the basement family room. The stairs and certain spots in the family room have been cleaned, but it still needs a thorough cleaning.

Emma went on a bike ride with her friend on Saturday afternoon. There is a horse boarding stable behind our neighborhood. Emma and Kaisyn Holdaway went there for their ride. Being horse lovers, the stopped to pet a couple of them. Well, one that was either jealous he wasn't being petted, or he was angry for some other reason known only to him, he took Emma's small forearm into its mouth and chomped down. She did not mention this to me until 2-3 hours had gone by. She said it didn't hurt at first. I think she was trying to be brave for her friend. At any rate, when she did tell me I could see a swollen area and a ring where the teeth had been. There were the beginnings of a bruise, but no broken skin.

I called Tami Tanner, our friend who runs a therapeutic horseback riding gig where Spencer and Emma volunteer to see if she thought I should be worried. She was sympathetic and said that it hurts really bad to get bitten by a horse and that if the horse had wanted to, skin would have been broken. She said to ice it and put clay on it and watch it. Done and done. She has been in a lot of pain since. We have a doctor's appointment scheduled for tomorrow so she can get her required immunizations before beginning seventh grade. I will have it checked out then. She didn't want to go to school today. I let her stay home.

Destry and I got in a late dinner on Saturday night and watched "Into the Woods."

On Sunday I finished my preparations for Primary music time and presented my Easter themed activity. It went well. The kids' sang their testimonies of the Savior beautifully. I love my calling and I love the children!

I called my mom on Sunday morning to ask if she would mind coming early to help me prepare dinner. I was partially regretting agreeing to the menu of homemade chicken nuggets and mashed potatoes. I bought chicken tenders, so I didn't have to do any cutting, but I knew there would be a lot of breading going on. Sadly, my mom is sick and unable to come. Emma helped me out with about half of it. I' pretty sure that I will not be breading 10 lbs. of chicken tenders in a single afternoon ever again. I never peel potatoes when our family has mashed potatoes, but I usually do for guests. This time I skipped that step and was glad I did. Scrubbing and mashing were enough. Dinner was ready on time and we had more that enough, as usual. It is great to have so many family members willing and able to attend birthdays; although we miss those who are out of state!

Spencer and Taylor are helping with our stake's production of "The Lamb of God." It is a musical and narrative portrayal of the last week of the Savior's life. It is beautiful and testimony building. The boys are helping with the sound equipment. They are learning a lot and enjoying it too. They were in and out for the party. JR and Tammy and family stayed a bit longer than everyone else. I'm glad they did. I enjoy visiting with them and the kids enjoy playing with their cousins.

We got done everything we had committed to and decided to do. Hooray!

I Should Have Known, But I Didn't or It's Been a Year

I began this blog one year ago this month.  This is my 31st post.  That puts me at exactly 2.4 posts per month.  Not a world's record, but a personal best.  Up from the zippo I had before.  I started it so that my children would have some record of their family's life.  I haven't been very good at journal keeping in the past.  I have been hit or miss at best.  What I hadn't anticipated was how much I have enjoyed writing and reading this blog.  I have reread my posts, some of them several times.  They have made me laugh, cry and reminisce about my life.  I like to write, so it should not have been such a surprise.  But for some reason or other I didn't realize how much I would benefit from it.  Maybe next year I will average a 3 or even 4 posts each month.  I have ideas and notable life events that I could write about, but we shall see.

Yesterday we had a "Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad" morning that ended with a Christlike Kindness

Last Saturday morning SHOULD have been an ordinary Saturday morning.  The children have "Saturday chores" that they are required to do before they move on with their day.  There are a few exceptions.  This morning Spencer had an exception because his scout troop led by Destry went on a rock climbing expedition.  It was a gorgeous day!  They had a great time thanks to Destry's former missionary companion and friend, Dallin Ward, who shared his talents and expertise with the group.  Spencer was the star as I was told.   For those of us who stayed behind, it should have been chore time after they left.  They were all playing together nicely for a while and I just let them.  It is fun to see them getting along and playing well.  At around 10:00 I reminded them  to get get started because Emma had her first basketball game of the season and Estelle had a birthday party that both started at 1:00.  That should have been no problem. ...

It Has Only Taken Her 9 Years, but Estelle Finally Sleeps All Night Long In Her Own Bed: She Can Do Hard Things!

Estelle will turn the big 9 on May 4th. She has only slept through the night in her own bed a few times each year for her entire life until about two months ago. After spending a lot of energy worrying and bribing and consequencing I finally surrendered and figured that she would sleep through the night whenever she was ready. I put a pillow and blanket on my bedroom floor and told her to just lay herself down there. That worked for a couple of years until she decided a year ago that she would get in bed with Emma instead. While that did not bother me at all, Emma was not too fond of that arrangement. After a fair amount of understandable crankiness from Emma, Estelle was informed that she either needed to remain in her own bed or sleep on someone's floor. She has been more partial to Emma's floor lately, but after having slept in a bed all night she would rather do that. A few months before she turned seven I thought I had the sure thing for motivating her. Destry had put i...
