Purchasing clothing for five children is not usually something I look forward to. If money grew on trees, it may or may not be different. Plus, some of them are really picky, not just about how the clothes look, but how they feel. Shoes are especially challenging for some of my little sweeties. However, this year, in spite of the fact that money does not grow on trees, it was rather enjoyable.
Emma needed a pair of shoes to take to Clear Creek Camp mid July, so I decided to make good use of our time out and get her school shopping done as well. We had fun together. She always surprises me a little bit when we shop because she acts like she is a no frills kind of a girl and in many ways she is, but she really likes feminine looking clothes. She is growing up too. 6th graders are the top dogs in school. (She even got selected to be on the student council. Something I did not know at the time of shopping, but since I am behind the times in writing, I know this now. She is doing a great job and even read the announcements along with two other council members during their weekly assemblies in front of the whole school. I was so proud! I thought that her shyness and her insecurities about reading would have prevented her from wanting to do this task, but she did it during the third week of school. She is my example for doing hard things). Anyway, I was pleased that I had one child outfitted for school before the stores even before the stores were advertising their back to school sales.
The boys were next. Both of them have grown so much that the bulk of the budget went to them this time around. I took them together. They shop much differently than girls, but I would not dare to buy anything without their approval! They don't want to try anything on. If they do they just pull the shirt on over the one they were wearing. I was pleased with their choices this year. Happily, they have both graduated from t-shirts only. In fact, Taylor got one t-shirt and Spencer didn't choose any. Taylor really wanted a suit coat to wear to church, but I told him I didn't have enough money right now for that, but he saw a vest that he really wanted. The price was right so I got it. He went home and ordered a fedora from Amazon with his own money and couldn't wait to try it on with his vest. He looks dapper! He also bought himself a pair of sunglasses, the style has a name which I don't recall. I didn't even know what a fedora was until he showed me.
Estelle really wanted to go the mall to shop and to make it a date with just mom. She has lots of clothes, so I told her she could either get one outfit or two shirts because she didn't really need anything, but you have to have something new to wear on the first day of school and she is Estelle and shopping is what you do when your name means "star." She is a surprisingly frugal shopper as well. If something costs too much she moves on. She actually got to go shopping twice because we only found a jacket in the mall before Destry called and needed some assistance at home. She was happy to go to Kohl's and Target, our usual shopping places because I don't want to travel very far. She lucked out and got a cute outfit and a dress because the dress was on clearance and it was much too cute to leave on the rack. We went to lunch on our first shopping date and got a treat on our second. She even agreed to let Sarah come the second time. She only got one outfit because she really didn't need any clothes either.
I enjoyed my time with my cute kids either individually or in pairs. They all looked super cute on the first day of school. As it turns out, however, at the last minute we decided to enroll Taylor in a charter school and had to rush out to buy uniforms for him the night before he started. The other clothes are still put to good use, because he really needed a complete wardrobe overhaul. I loved going before it got crowded and was so proud of myself for being prepared. I was extra grateful because we had to wait for 20 minutes for Taylor to try on the uniforms and another 20 minutes at the checkout. It gave me some one on one time with him.
